ABOUT THE STANTON GUILDHOUSE
The Stanton Guildhouse is a charitable trust, created in the 1960s by the entrepreneurial vision of Mary Osborn, who dedicated her life to the promotion of learning, creativity and personal development. The house was built in the Arts and Crafts tradition and in the design of a country manor, from reclaimed Cotswold stone, former flagstones from the streets of London and beams from oak trees on the Blenheim Palace Estate. The house, whose features include many examples of fine craftsmanship, thoroughly merits its status as a Grade II listed building.
It is associated with many illustrious supporters including Mahatma Gandhi, John Betjeman, Flora Robson, J. B. Priestly and Enid Blyton. The Guildhouse has been a place of calm and inspiration for these people and for the many others who have visited and stayed in the house. It is still inspiring new visitors and guests from all walks of life today.
Located on the scarp slope of the Cotswolds there are wonderful, uninterrupted views westwards over the Vale of Evesham to Bredon Hill and beyond to the Malvern Hills. There are endless opportunities for walking or just for relaxation and recuperation but, despite its apparent isolation, the Guildhouse is within walking distance of Stanton village, only 4 miles from Broadway and 9 miles from Chipping Campden.
The house is available as a holiday let at weekends during term time and during schools holidays. During the week in term time the Guildhouse workshops next door host courses in, for example, painting, wood turning, wood and stone carving, pottery and stained glass making. For an additional charge, it may also be possible to arrange these and other courses at weekends or during school holidays on request and subject to the availability of an appropriate tutor. During term time it is sometimes possible to stay at the Guildhouse during the week provided you did not mind course attendees having access to the ground floor of the house at break times. Accommodation would then be at a reduced rate.
Whilst most visitors are likely to want to self-cater, full or partial catering can be arranged. Sample menus are available on request.
The furnishings are simple but comfortable. The Guildhouse makes ideal accommodation for large family or friendship groups, wedding receptions or staff training at a realistic price.
There is a discount available for registered charities.
Oil fired central heating throughout and a wood burning stove in the sitting room. Windows are not double glazed so you are advised to bring warmer clothes in the colder weather
SITTING ROOM
A large room and the focus of recreational activity with solid wood floors and wooden doors opening out on to a sun terrace. There is comfortable seating round the wood burning stove with additional window seats. Two wooden tables with chairs encourage board games and there is also a grand piano for the musically inclined.
DINING ROOM/TV ROOM
There is seating for up to 15 round the large dining table and the room can double as a TV or reading room. The TV has an integral DVD player and bookshelves line one wall. A range of board games and a library of books (largely related to the themes of the courses offered) are provided.
BREAKFAST ROOM
Smaller and more intimate than the Dining Room, the Breakfast Room is next to the kitchen and so ideal for those who want to stagger their breakfasts or linger over morning coffee or afternoon tea.
KITCHEN
Pine clad walls and a quarry tiled floor. An AGA with two hot and two warm ovens, and hot plates makes this a permanently cosy room. The solid wood kitchen units were designed and hand made by Raymond Shaw, a designer and joiner and one of the original volunteers at the property. The kitchen is equipped with place settings for 15 people, 4 slice toaster and coffee maker. There is ample working space and a double sink.
UTILITY ROOM
Adjacent to the kitchen this contains a washer/dryer, tall fridge, under-counter freezer, dishwasher, microwave and an additional 2 ring electric hob that can be used in the kitchen. Work surfaces are laminate. Iron and ironing board in a cupboard upstairs.
TWO WCs
There are 2 WCs on the ground floor to the right of the main entrance to the property.
STAIRCASE
A solid oak, hand-carved staircase is a real feature of the house and leads from the Sitting Room to the first floor.
QUIET AREA
This is immediately to the right at the top of the stairs and has comfortable seating for six.
The bedrooms are quite simple in design but are comfortable and all have adequate drawer, hanging space either in the room or just outside and bedside rugs. Bedside lamps are provided throughout. All beds are 3ft single beds
MARY OSBORN’S BEDROOM SUITE
At the end of the corridor is a twin room with wardrobe and two seater sofa and desk. There is a separate bathroom with bath and hand held shower attachment, hand basin and WC. An adjacent seating area has a two seater sofa and enough space for a cot.
FAMILY BEDROOM
A large room with four single beds, armchair and adequate drawer space. There are wooden hooks on the back of the door to provide hanging space and a wardrobe cupboard outside to the left with additional space.
LARGER TWIN ROOM
Another large room with two single beds and ample space for a cot. Two seater sofa and chest of drawers. Wardrobe cupboard as above opposite.
THREE TWIN ROOMS
A further three smaller twin rooms open from a carpeted corridor. All have drawer space, one has an armchair and two have desks. Hanging space is provided in shallow wardrobe cupboards built into the exterior wall across the corridor.
To the left at the top of the stairs is :
SHOWER ROOM
Walk in shower, hand basin and WC
Almost straight ahead at the top of the stairs a door gives access to:
BATHROOM 2
Bath, hand basin and WC.
BATHROOM 3
Bath and hand basin
SINGLE BEDROOM
A small single room with bed, rocking chair and bedside chest.
OUTSIDE
Doors from the Sitting Room open to a terrace with benches and planted tubs where guests can soak up the sun or marvel at the view. Stone steps lead down through shrub borders to the sloping lawned area beyond. The grounds continue behind the workshops with a variety of trees and shrubs to be explored.
ACCESS AND PARKING
There are several parking spaces behind the house and, for the more energetic, further down the drive.
