BURFORD –
Southern Gateway of the Cotswolds
Burford is a small town, rich in history and with many specialist
shops, tea shops, restaurants and places of interest to visit.
- St John Baptist is one of the top twenty churches in the
country for historic interest. Dating from 1175 it has been
added to over the years. If you visit you can learn about
the 340 Levellers who Cromwell incarcerated there and who
are commemorated each May by a pageant in the town.
- Visit the Tolsey Museum – built in c1500. This white,
half timbered, doublegable structure is now houses a museum
packed with exhibits.
- Just nearby is Burford Garden Centre, occupying some 15
acres and packed – a full day is needed to see everything
here.
- Or visit Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens just south
of Burford. 160 acres of landscaped park and walled gardens.
The wildlife park opened in 1970 and is now one of the best
animal collections in the country.
SWINBROOK
is a lovely base to explore not only The Cotswolds but also
Oxfordshire. Only 3 km (2 miles) east of Burford, on the River
Windrush. It is a very pretty small village with 17th-and
18th-century houses and cottages.
- St Mary's Church, mostly Decorated and Perpendicular,
with interesting monuments and wood carving. Two of the
Mitford sisters are buried here. Nancy, the authoress and
Unity.
- On one side of the river at the entrance to the village
lies the pretty cricket field; on the other, The Swan Inn.
The Swan has flagstone floors, settles and wisteria climbing
the outside walls which gives it that timeless feel so sought
by country pubs, but this one is all original. Good food
and real ale
- There are riverside walks upstream to Widford and downstream
to Asthall and Minster Lovell.
- The Oxfordshire cycle path runs through Swinbrook.
