Pond, Willersey |
Saintbury is a dreaming Cotswold hamlet,
pure England, through which an ancient road now known as Buckle
Street passes.
Saintbury is situated between Chipping Campden and Broadway and is only three miles from either one.
At the top of Saintbury Hill is the Dormy House Hotel where you can eat either in the hotel dining room or in the Barn Owl Bar.
Also at the top of Saintbury Hill is Broadway Golf Club
From the bottom of the hill, Willersey is only one mile away. A much larger village than Saintbury it comes complete
with village green, duck pond, two pubs which offer food,
a village shop which also sells newspapers, post office and
a small garage.
The church of St
Nicholas, built on the side of Saintbury hill, commands a
fine view over the Vale of Evesham. The present church is
Norman and later, but a Saxon church stood on the site. Fragments of this are preserved such as the remarkable Anglo-Saxon
mass dial (a primitive sundial) situated on the south wall
above a blocked Norman doorway.
The elegant spire
houses a peal of 6 bells and there is a Queen Anne vaulted
roof. Also on the south side can be found a Sheila-na-gig,
a goddess of fertility in British Celtic mythology.
She is portrayed as a female demon to ward off evil.
Chipping Campden and Broadway, both attractive Cotswold villages
are only 3 miles away.
