Events in the Cotswolds 2017

The Cotswolds’ year is packed with events, ranging from world famous international festivals like Cheltenham Literature Festival or Cheltenham Gold Cup Week to quirky events like the Cotswold Olimpick Games or Tetbury Wool Sack Races.  There are major musical events like the Wilderness Festival, Cornbury Festival or the Big Feastival, as well a packed events calender featuring music, exhibitions, arts and literature festivals, theatrical productions.

You’ll find plenty of inspiration to help you make the most of your stay, whether you’re planning your visit around a particular festival or just looking to see what’s on when you’re here.

Dog Friendly Events

The Dogs Trust open day, Stratford Racecourse (June 25)

Hosted at Stratford Racecourse, the annual Dogs Trust open day has plenty to offer those who seek entertainment with the family and their four-legged friend. On Sunday June 25 expect a delightful dog show featuring plenty of demonstrations and displays, alongside refreshments, a giant tombola and stalls to browse. There is even a chance to meet some of the Dogs Trust dogs!

The Cotswold Show, Cirencester Park (July 1 and 2)

Set in 100 acres of stunning Cotswold countryside at Cirencester Park, The Cotswold Show offers families the perfect day out on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 July. Browse 200 trade shopping stands, admire culinary skills at the cookery theatre and enjoy a traditional rural skills showcase. There will also be Horseman of the Knight Jousting, Jump4Heroes skydiving, World of Dogs, the Cotswold Alpaca Experience and The Cotswold Reindeer Herd all to enjoy!

 BBC Countryfile Live, Blenheim Palace (August 3 – 5)

Following the great success of the event last year, Countryfile Live will return to the beautiful Blenheim Palace. From Thursday August 3 to Sunday August 6, guests can enjoy live arena shows, hands-on-activities, animal displays, debates, food, drink and shopping, all of course, showcasing what visitors love most about our glorious countryside. The four day extravaganza is the perfect way to celebrate our countryside with the family – and the dog too!

‘Farming, food, fun and fashion.’ Sound good? Well the Moreton-in-Marsh Show is definitely your bag! On September 2, the popular agricultural show returns to town with plenty for all the family to see, do and taste. Take a wander around the 350 trade stands selling everything from delicious locally sourced produce and luxury clothing to combine harvesters. After a spot of shopping, enjoy a bevy of thrilling entertainment including a vintage tractor display, dancing sheep and the yellow diggers from JCB, and much more.

The Broadway Arts Festival 2016 (June 3rd – 19th) is nearly here.

This fourth biennial festival features twelve participatory based art and music workshops, an eight strong lecture series, concerts, theatre and photography. 400 years have passed since Shakespeare’s death, and Sir Roy Strong explores the quest for his garden at New Place Stratford-upon-Avon. Join him on a journey involving a bizarre cast of characters.

Broadway Arts Festival Open Art Exhibition This prestigious exhibition features 200 works for sale at the Little Buckland Gallery. It includes the winners and runners up of the Festival’s Open Art competition, from small framed paintings, to large sculptures in the garden.The ever popular ‘Visitors’ Choice’ award will be chosen by visitors to the exhibition, so come along and vote for your favourite entry.

The Art of World War II – A Personal Collection The John Noott Collection of World War II art will be on show. This is a unique exhibition which reflects the memories of the War of art dealer John Noott who has collected over 70 paintings, drawings and prints.   Among the artists represented are Edward Bawden, Edward Seago, Pearl Falconer and Shearer Armstrong.

VOCES8 The British vocal ensemble is now established as one of the most versatile and best-loved international singing groups. ‘Sing Joyfully’ celebrates the joy and beauty of voices in harmony and will include works by William Byrd, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov and songs arranged by Jim Clements They are also running a free workshop Music for ages 12-19.

Nicholas Merryweather Schumann’s Dichterliebe, considered by many his best song cycle, is beautifully complemented by a selection of English songs in this delightful recital by the distinguished baritone, Nicholas Merryweather, already well-known here from his appearances at Longborough Festival Opera. He will be accompanied by Joseph Ramadam on piano.

Trio Severn The trio featuring Zoe Beyers on violin, David Powell on cello and Robert Markham on piano will present a concert to include Schumann Piano Trio in D minor, Messiaen –  Louange à l’éternité de Jésus, Debussy Violin Sonata in G minor and Shostakovitch Piano Trio no 2 in E minor.

John Julius Norwich John Julius Norwich will give a talk entitled ‘Paddy’s World’ about international travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, who lived in nearby Dumbleton. After the war a succession of books – mostly, but not invariably, about Greece – revealed him as perhaps the greatest travel writer that this country has ever produced.
